When you think of an unforgettable adventure, a road trip is probably one of the first things that come to mind. Recently, I had the opportunity to experience a journey that was not only memorable but also filled with cultural significance: my road trip from Delhi to Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. This journey, full of sights, sounds, and spirituality, deserves to be shared.
Planning the Trip from Delhi to Maha Kumbh
I wanted this trip to be special, so I decided to rent a car. Renting a car is one of the best ways to enjoy the open road. It gives you the freedom to go wherever you want at your own pace. I found MTC, a reliable car rental company that offered various vehicles. After some research, I chose a comfortable SUV. It was ideal for long drives and could accommodate my friends, making it even more exciting.
Hitting the Road
On a bright morning, my friends and I packed our bags, filled the car with snacks and drinks, and set off from Delhi. The distance from Delhi to Prayagraj is around 800 kilometers, which can easily take 12-14 hours by car. But we were excited and ready for the adventure.
The hubbub of city life began to recede as we made our way out of Delhi and into more serene countryside.
Fields after fields of mustard flowers stretched as far as the eye could reach. The golden yellow flowers danced in the breeze, creating a breathtaking picture. Of course, we did make a few stops on the way, to stretch our legs, take photos, and sample some local cuisine. We stopped at roadside dhabas, which served us the delicious parathas, lassis, and other North Indian delicacies.
A Cultural Experience
The landscape began to change as we drove through Uttar Pradesh, and so did the vibe. Filled with excitement, the air hummed as we approached Prayagraj, especially since the Mahakumbh is about to take place. Maha Kumbh, one of the world’s greatest congregations of pilgrims, this takes place every twelve years at the Ganges, Yamuna, and the mythical Sarawati rivers’ confluence.
As we entered Prayagraj, the city was charged. The preparation for Mahakumbh seemed to have the city on an electric mood, with temporary camps appearing everywhere, colorful tents sprouting out everywhere, and religious leaders meeting their devotees. We could sense the excitement all around, which was quite contagious.

Accommodation in Prayagraj
The next on our agenda was finding accommodation. The Mahakumbh attracts millions of visitors, hence accommodation can sometimes be tricky. Luckily, we had booked a hotel in advance. However, if anyone is thinking of visiting, it is highly recommended that one books early. Many pilgrims camp in tents by the riverbank; we preferred to stay in a hotel for comfort.
Experiencing the Maha Kumbh
The main attraction of this trip was, of course, the Mahakumbh Mela. Our first day was spent exploring the Mela. The sight of thousands of people from all walks of life converging was surreal. Colorful stalls selling religious items, books, food, and clothing lined the banks of the river. The sound of chanting, music, and laughter filled the air.
What struck us most was the spirit of unity and devotion. Everyone was here for a common purpose—to take a holy dip in the Ganges and cleanse their souls. We joined the crowds and slowly made our way to the riverbank. Standing on the banks of the Ganges, the feeling was overwhelming. As I dipped my feet into the holy water, a wave of calm washed over me. It’s hard to explain, but in that moment, I felt connected to something greater than myself.
Meeting Amazing People
One of the best parts of the trip was meeting people from different backgrounds. We exchanged stories with locals, including sadhus (holy men) who shared their experiences and wisdom. They welcomed us with warm smiles and offered advice on spirituality and life. It was an eye-opening experience that enriched our understanding of Indian culture and spirituality.
Exploring More
During our stay of three days, we made sure to explore other facades of this city. So, we paid a visit to some magnificent temples like Ananda Bhawan—the family abode of the Nehrus—and, of course, the Allahabad Fort, a very ancient site that reflects architectural beauty in the ancient Indian format. The place has a history imprinted over every stone; each place, its story to tell.
As we drove around Prayagraj in our rental car, we easily navigated the busy streets and discovered little gems, such as quaint cafes and quiet parks that provided a break from the hustle and bustle of the Mela.
Returning Home from Prayagraj to Delhi
So, after a few days of spiritual cleansing and immersion into the culture, it was now time to head back home to Delhi. We packed up and filled up the car with memories while headed home. While in the car we talked much about our experiences, what friends, and lessons we were taking with us as a gift in return from Mahakumbh.
To Conclude: An Awesome Road Trip from Delhi to Prayagraj
This road trip by renting a car from Delhi to Prayagraj for the Mahakumbh was more than a journey; it was an awakening. By hiring a SUV, we had the freedom to explore at our own pace and create lasting memories. For anyone considering a similar trip, I highly recommend it.
