During the summers, India provides the perfect escape with its pleasant climate and stunning landscapes. I would like to share my personal experiences visiting three tourist spots highly recommended for the hot season. Ranging from the North of India to the south, these places are Manali in Himachal Pradesh, Coorg in Karnataka, and Mannur in Kerala.
Manali – The Valley of Gods
Located in Himachal Pradesh, Manali is a blend of calm landscapes and vibrant culture. Manali is a town situated in Kullu Valley, with the Beas River increasing its beauty. It bears a strong historical and mythological aspect. Manali provides you an opportunity to visit the antique temple dedicated to the sage Manu. The best time to visit is from May to October because of warm summers with relative coldness.

The range of activities is vast: trekking in Beas Kund Trek and Deo Tibba Base Camp Trek and river rafting to paragliding and skiing on Solang Valley and Rohtang Pass slopes. For those who prefer less adventure, there are soothing cafes like Café 1947 and Ocho Kitchen, Old Manali. Local markets display handmade crafts and traditional attire. Manali is a homeland for religious sites sacred to both Hinduism and Buddhism. Hadimba Temple, dedicated to Hidimbi Devi of Mahabharata and Manali Gompa, a spot of the local Buddhist monasteries deserves visitations. If you are a nature enthusiast, then Solang Valley, a side valley of Kullu and Sissu Falls, on the Leh–Manali Highway must be on the list.
Coorg – The Scotland of India
Coorg, located in the Western Ghats of Karnataka, is famous for its lush coffee plantations and picturesque landscapes. Often referred to as the Scotland of India, its uniqueness is its captivating setting.
Coorg is rich in cultural heritage. The Kodava community, native to this region, is known for its warm hospitality and delicious cuisine. Take advantage of the Kadambuttu: Steamed Rice Dumplings and Pandi Curry. Raja’s Seat, Abbey Falls, located near Madikeri, and Dubare Elephant Camp are must-visit places that offer a mix of history, nature, and adventure. One can interact with elephants in Dubare Elephant Camp if one is fond of animals.
Munnar – A Haven of Peace
In the heart of Kerala, Munnar is a calm retreat famous for its tea gardens and rare flora and fauna. The green hills provide not only visual pleasure but also an opportunity to explore the tea-making process from the leaf to cup.
Eravikulam National Park in Munnar allows you to see the rare Nilgiri Tahr up close. Bird watching and wildlife safaris are also popular activities here. Dining in Munnar allows you to try local Kerala cuisine which is rich in spices and flavors. Ari Pathri, somewhat like chappatis and Chicken Curry and Appam and prawn curry are a delicious delight.
Comparing the Climate and Crowds
While all three places are ideal for summer, they vary in climate and crowd levels. Manali can get quite cool in the evenings, while Coorg and Munnar are milder. In terms of crowds, Manali tends to be more tourist-heavy, especially during peak seasons.
Accessibility and Transportation
Manali, Coorg, and Munnar are all well-connected by road with nearby cities. However, Coorg and Munnar can be more challenging to reach due to their hilly terrain. For a trouble-free journey through these places, car rental come as easy option.
